BYD Yangwang U8 and U9: Sourcing China's Flagship EVs From the UAE for Europe

BYD's Yangwang sub-brand launched with two of the most technically interesting production cars in the world: the U8 luxury SUV with tank-turn and the U9 electric supercar. Both are entering the UAE market ahead of most European availability, opening a sourcing window for early adopters.

Yangwang U8: the tank-turn SUV

The Yangwang U8 is a full-size hybrid SUV with four independent electric motors, one per wheel. Each motor is independently controlled, enabling the tank-turn feature (rotating on the spot by reversing wheels on one side), and providing exceptional low-speed torque vectoring.

Sourcing status in the UAE

BYD Yangwang has begun UAE distribution through official BYD channels. Stock is limited but available:

European homologation status

The U8 has begun EU type approval processes. As of Q3 2026, EU CoCs are not yet issued for U8 or U9 imports; individual approval remains the required path for European registration.

Practical implication: import to countries with efficient individual approval processes (Netherlands via RDW, Belgium, Poland). Avoid German TÜV Einzelabnahme on these cars until factory CoC availability is confirmed.

Tank-turn legality in Europe

Tank-turn as a feature exists in a legal grey area for public road use in most EU countries. The manoeuvre is not explicitly prohibited but may violate general road-use rules around controlled vehicle motion. Off-road use is unaffected. We advise clients to treat tank-turn as an off-road feature only.

Charging compatibility

Software: the U8 and U9 use BYD's Xuanji infotainment system with Chinese-first UI. English language options are limited compared to BYD's mainstream models (Han, Seal). We recommend factoring in a software update pass at delivery.

European insurers have limited Yangwang precedent. Expect:

Warranty and service

BYD's warranty on Yangwang vehicles is 6 years or 150,000 km for battery, 3 years or 60,000 km for vehicle. European warranty transferability is being negotiated with BYD Europe. As of 2026, transfer is case-by-case; verify per VIN.

Service network: BYD Europe covers standard models. Yangwang service in Europe is not yet formalised. Expect service intervals to require coordination through BYD Middle East until European Yangwang centres open.
