UAE to UK Car Import 2026: Post-Brexit IVA, VAT, and Real Landed Cost

Since Brexit, importing a car from the UAE to the United Kingdom follows a completely different process to the pre-2021 route. If you are researching how to import a car from Dubai to the UK in 2026, this is the definitive guide: every step, every cost, and every form.

The high-level import process

A UAE to UK car import in 2026 breaks down into six stages:

  1. Source the car in the UAE (dealer, private, or auction like Copart MEA or Emirates Auction)
  2. Pre-purchase inspection and purchase
  3. Export from Jebel Ali (or Sohar, given current Strait routing)
  4. HMRC customs entry and payment of duty + VAT at UK port
  5. IVA test (Individual Vehicle Approval) if no valid EU/UK CoC
  6. DVLA registration and UK plates

Duty, VAT, and taxes in 2026

The UK charges the following on any car imported from a non-preferential trade country like the UAE:

  • Import duty: 10% of the customs value (car price + shipping + insurance to UK port)
  • UK VAT: 20% of the customs value plus import duty
  • Vehicle Excise Duty (VED): annual road tax, banded by CO₂ and list price

Combined effective rate: roughly 32% of the invoice value.

The IVA test explained

The IVA test is the UK's equivalent of German TÜV Einzelabnahme. It certifies your imported car meets UK construction and use regulations. Most modern UAE-market cars from European manufacturers already meet the technical requirements, but the test is still mandatory unless you have a valid Certificate of Conformity accepted by the DVSA.

Cost: £456 for the test itself. Preparation (headlight beam adjustment, rear fog light fitment, mph speedometer) can add £200 to £800 depending on the car.

DVLA registration

After a pass on the IVA and clearance from HMRC, you file form V55/5 with the DVLA along with your Notification of Vehicle Arrival (NOVA) reference, your import documents, and your insurance certificate. Plates typically arrive within 10 to 14 working days.

Real landed cost example

Example: 2024 Range Rover Autobiography sourced in Dubai for £120,000.

  • Purchase price: £120,000
  • Sourcing fee: £4,500
  • 248-point inspection: £550
  • Container shipping via Sohar to Southampton (given current Strait routing): £4,600
  • Marine insurance: £480
  • HMRC import duty (10%): £12,558
  • UK VAT (20% on car + shipping + duty): £28,458
  • IVA test + preparation: £950
  • DVLA registration and plates: £55
  • Total landed cost: approximately £172,150

The same car at a UK Land Rover retailer: £186,000 to £198,000. Saving: £14,000 to £26,000.

Historic Vehicle status (30+ years old)

If the car you are importing is 30 or more years old, it qualifies for historic vehicle status. This brings two big advantages: 0% import duty and reduced 5% VAT (instead of 20%). The savings on a classic imported to the UK are dramatic. See our classic sourcing guide for detail.

Common UAE to UK import mistakes

  1. Not verifying the car's CoC status before purchase (drives up IVA prep cost)
  2. Underdeclaring value to reduce VAT — HMRC data-shares with UK dealers and this is fraud
  3. Skipping marine insurance during shipping
  4. Assuming an insurance quote is available before you have a UK V5C

FAQ

Typically 7 to 11 weeks from purchase to UK plates. Sohar routing (given the Strait of Hormuz closure) adds 4 to 7 days versus pre-2025 Jebel Ali direct shipping.
The UAE has 5% VAT which is fully refunded on export. UK VAT (20%) is payable on the imported customs value regardless of what was paid in the origin market.
The UAE market is left-hand drive. UK is right-hand drive. A UK-spec RHD car may be easier to import from Japan (which drives on the same side) or from a UK-spec order shipped to the UAE originally.
