UAE to France Car Import: DREAL Homologation, CO₂ Malus, and the €90k Trap

The three French import taxes

Three separate taxes apply at French registration:

1. Malus écologique (CO₂ malus): up to 70,000 EUR based on CO₂ emissions

These are 2026 rates. The scale tightens every year, so a car importable in 2025 without huge malus may not be by 2027.

Malus au poids: the weight tax

Introduced to catch heavy SUVs missed by the CO₂ tax alone. Applies to vehicles weighing over 1,600 kg (kerb weight). Rate: 10 EUR per kg above the threshold. A 2,600 kg G63 attracts 10,000 EUR in weight malus on top of the CO₂ malus.

Exempt: fully electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids under specific electric-range criteria, and cars registered as historic vehicles.

DREAL homologation (Réception à Titre Isolé)

If your car has no EU Certificate of Conformity, you need réception à titre isolé (RTI) from the local DREAL office. This is France's individual approval process.

• Cost: 600 to 1,200 EUR for the RTI dossier
• Time: 2 to 4 months for approval
• Documentation: French-language technical file required
