BPM: the Dutch registration tax

BPM (Belasting Personenauto's en Motorrijwielen) is the Dutch registration tax. It replaced the old catalog price tax in 2026 and now scales primarily by CO₂ emissions.

The RDW keuring inspection

After customs, your car goes to an RDW test centre. They check identity (VIN, chassis), technical safety (brakes, lights, tyres, chassis), and emissions. For most modern UAE, Japanese, and Korean market cars this is straightforward. Rare cases requiring modification are usually limited to:

• Rear fog light fitment (mandatory in EU)
• Speedometer in km/h (an overlay is acceptable in most cases)
• Reflectors and side marker lights

RDW test fee: approximately 190 EUR. Preparation, if needed: 100 to 400 EUR.

Registration and Dutch number plates

Once your car passes RDW keuring, you receive a kentekenbewijs (Dutch registration certificate) and can request kenteken plates. This step usually completes within 3 to 7 working days after inspection.
